reliquary (2016) for oboe, string trio, and harp

Reliquary is about how each everyday act of remembering is also an act of reinvention. Christian relics were often falsified, stolen, or even fought over, and the reliquaries that held them began to take on a profound symbolic weight. Even as our own understanding of the relics changed and the relics themselves decayed over time, their decorative containers stayed the same. The idea of permanence in the face of a changing environment was evocative to me on both a musical and personal level, and the piece explores this concept of a musical idea enduring even as it evolves and decays. The musical cells of the piece are ever present and ever changing, engaging in sometimes gentle and sometimes violent variations as they grow more fragmented and faded.
